Understanding bipolar through a narrative lens
If you are looking into narrative therapy for bipolar, the starting point is less about symptom labels and more about the stories you and others use to make sense of mood, identity and life events. Narrative therapy, developed in Australia and New Zealand in the 1980s by Michael White and David Epston, begins from the idea that people live their lives through stories. Some of those stories - passed down through families, workplaces, schools or wider culture - can be thin, overly negative or limiting. For someone living with experiences labelled bipolar, familiar stories often carry themes of unpredictability, blame, or being defined by diagnosis. A narrative approach invites you to separate the problem from who you are, to describe the problem in its own terms, and to notice moments that do not fit the familiar storyline.
When you work narratively, the focus is on how events have been stitched together into a coherent account and what those accounts make possible or impossible for you. Instead of concentrating primarily on symptom lists, the work pays attention to the meanings attached to episodes of mood change, the social and cultural messages that shape those meanings, and the local knowledge you have about your values and commitments. This does not promise a particular outcome - there is no way to tell in advance whether an approach will suit you - but it does offer a different way to explore how experiences have been interpreted and what alternative stories might better reflect who you are and what matters to you.
How narrative therapy works with bipolar
Narrative practice uses a set of related practices to open up space between you and the difficulties you face. The first of these is externalising - talking about the problem as something that exists outside you so it can be described, named and examined. In the context of bipolar, externalising might mean discussing "mood swings" or "the racing thoughts" as phenomena that influence your life, rather than as intrinsic, unchangeable parts of your identity. That shift lets you map how the problem shows up, where it appears most strongly, and when you have been able to resist or act differently.
Another important practice is noticing unique outcomes - those moments when your day or relationships did not follow the familiar story. These events are treated as openings for more varied, richer descriptions of who you are. A narrative therapist will also trace the genealogy of a story - exploring where ideas about bipolar came from, how people close to you have contributed to the account, and which cultural narratives have made certain descriptions feel inevitable. Re-authoring and re-membering conversations are later stage practices that help you build a preferred story - an account that better reflects your values, commitments and what you want to hold onto in ordinary life. Other narrative practices used in this work include thin and rich description, outsider witness conversations and definitional ceremony - each aimed at widening the range of possible stories about your experiences. Keep in mind that many therapists who list narrative therapy among their approaches also draw on other methods, so the exact mix of practices will vary by therapist.
What to expect in narrative sessions for bipolar
Early narrative conversations are often exploratory and descriptive. Your therapist will likely ask you to tell the story of how the difficulties began, how they have been talked about, and what words you use to describe them. Questions are framed to encourage rich description and to separate the problem from your identity - for example, "When does the mood tend to appear?" or "What does that part of the experience want you to do?" The pace is typically collaborative and conversational; the therapist listens for exceptions to the familiar story and for details that point to your values or strengths.
As therapy continues, sessions may shift from naming and mapping the problem to identifying unique outcomes and to re-authoring conversations. This can involve narrating alternative threads of experience, inviting people who matter to witness or contribute to new stories, or creating rituals that acknowledge change. How much of a session is explicitly narrative will depend on each therapist - many combine narrative practices with other approaches to address practical needs, emotional regulation or skills development. You should feel able to ask a therapist directly how they use narrative tools, what a typical session looks like, and how they integrate other methods if relevant.
Is a narrative approach the right fit for bipolar?
People are drawn to narrative work for different reasons. You might prefer it if you do not want to be defined solely by a diagnostic label, if you are interested in exploring how family and cultural stories shape your experience, or if you want an approach that focuses on values and identity as well as difficulties. Narrative therapy tends to appeal to those who value collaboration, storytelling, and the idea that meaning can be negotiated and reshaped over time. That said, there is no way to tell in advance whether narrative work will suit you. Many people use an initial conversation to assess fit - looking for how the therapist listens, the kinds of questions they ask, and whether they attend to your values and commitments.
Narrative work is not primarily a technique for changing thought content in the way cognitive-behavioural approaches often are, nor does it focus mainly on skills training in the manner of some behavioural therapies. It also differs from psychodynamic work, which tends to emphasize insight into past relationships and unconscious processes. Therapists who list narrative therapy among their approaches may well integrate elements from these other methods depending on your needs. If you are considering multiple approaches, discussing how a therapist draws from narrative practice and when they might add other methods can help you decide which direction feels most comfortable.
How to choose a therapist who works narratively with bipolar
When you review profiles, look at the language therapists use about their approach. The directory records that a therapist lists narrative therapy among their approaches - that listing does not confirm a particular credential or training. It is reasonable to ask directly how much of their work is narrative, how they describe a typical session, and how they measure progress. You might also ask about their professional registration or licensure and any local requirements that matter where you live. A first conversation with a therapist is often the best way to evaluate fit - notice whether you feel heard, whether the questions asked help you describe your experience in richer ways, and whether the therapist is willing to explore alternative storylines with you.
For many people narrative work translates well to online video sessions because it is conversational and relies on storytelling, meaning you can often engage with the same practices across distance. If in-person meetings matter to you, ask whether the therapist offers face-to-face appointments in a comfortable environment. Ultimately, choosing a therapist is a personal decision and you may find that trying an initial conversation is the clearest way to discover whether a narrative approach aligns with your preferences and goals.
Remember that narrative therapy is one of several approaches available, and that most practitioners combine methods to meet real-life needs. Use the listings below to explore profiles of therapists who list narrative therapy among their approaches, and consider asking the questions above to find a good fit for the way you want to understand and live with your experiences.
