Why a narrative approach to relationship matters
When relationships feel stuck you are often living inside a set of stories - about who you are, who your partner is, and what the relationship is allowed to be. Narrative therapy, developed in Australia and New Zealand in the 1980s by Michael White and David Epston, begins from the assumption that these stories shape how you act and how you make meaning. The starting point is not a list of symptoms but the narratives that give those experiences context. Some of the stories you inherit from family, school, religious communities or wider culture can be thin or harsh - they reduce complex people to a single problem phrase, like "we always fight" or "I am the one who ruins things". Narrative practice aims to make those stories speakable, to separate them from your identity, and to open space for alternative, richer accounts that better reflect your values and commitments in everyday life.
For people concerned with relationship issues, a narrative approach tends to pay attention to the language you and others use about the relationship, the moments that do not fit the familiar story, and the social or historical pressures that have shaped your expectations. Rather than diagnosing a person or focusing only on internal thought patterns, narrative work looks outwards - at the stories that organise behaviour - and invites you to become an active author of a preferred story. This does not promise a quick fix. It offers a conversational way to examine how certain stories were formed and how different stories might be lived.
How narrative therapy works with relationship
In narrative work the problem is treated as something separate from the person or the partnership. Therapists who list narrative therapy among their approaches often begin by helping you name and externalise the problem - giving it a form that can be described, positioned, and interrogated. Externalising questions move discussion away from blaming and toward curiosity, for example asking how the problem shows up, when it is most present, and what effects it has on the relationship. This makes it easier to see patterns without reducing someone to a problem label.
Another key practice is tracing the origins of the familiar story. A narrative therapist will ask where a particular relationship story came from - whether it was modelled in your family, reinforced by cultural messages, or shaped by specific events. At the same time they look for unique outcomes - small events that do not fit the dominant story. Those moments are important because they provide raw material for alternative accounts. Over time, through re-authoring conversations, re-membering work with important people, and sometimes outsider witness practices, you and the therapist build a preferred story that aligns with your values and the life you want to lead. Definitional ceremony is a practice used to acknowledge changes in story in a public or relational way, helping new meanings settle into ordinary life.
What to expect in narrative sessions for relationship
Sessions that emphasise narrative practice tend to be conversational and exploratory. Early conversations often focus on naming the problem and externalising it - you might spend time describing how the problem behaves, what it affects in day-to-day life, and how it shows up for each person. The therapist asks questions that draw out descriptions rather than immediate solutions. This phase is about building enough detail to distinguish the problem from who you are and to surface exceptions to the familiar story.
Later sessions shift toward re-authoring - identifying values and commitments you want to live by and noticing actions that align with them. A therapist who works narratively may invite you to elaborate on specific events where the familiar story did not hold, to reflect on the meaning of those moments, and to experiment with new ways of talking and relating. Many clinicians who list narrative therapy combine it with other approaches, so the exact structure and techniques in a session will vary. It is important to ask how much of a therapist's work is narrative and what a typical session looks like for them, since practitioners often blend narrative practices with other methods depending on client needs.
Is a narrative approach the right fit for relationship?
People are often drawn to narrative work when they want to be treated as more than a diagnosis or a set of symptoms. If you feel that a story handed to you by family, culture, or past experience no longer fits, narrative conversations can help you unpack that story and explore alternatives. Compared with approaches that focus primarily on cognitive content, like CBT which targets specific thought patterns, narrative work concentrates on the broader stories that frame those thoughts. Compared with acceptance and commitment approaches, narrative therapy foregrounds the process of re-authoring meaning rather than emphasising specific behavioural commitments. Compared with psychodynamic work, which explores inner drives and past relational patterns for insight, narrative practice pays distinct attention to the public, social and linguistic origins of stories and to co-authoring new narratives in the present.
There is no way to tell in advance whether an approach will suit you. Many people use a first conversation to get a sense of the therapist's style and to see whether the narrative stance - externalising the problem, searching for unique outcomes, and building a preferred story - resonates with them. Therapists who list narrative therapy among their approaches may integrate it with other modalities when that seems helpful, so asking about treatment style and integration is a reasonable step when you speak with a clinician.
How to choose a therapist who works narratively with relationship
When you are looking through listings, focus on what matters to you - the therapist's stated approaches, their experience with relationship work, languages offered, and professional credentials or registrations in the place where they practice. Because the directory records that a therapist lists narrative therapy among their approaches, do not assume that a listing equals formal narrative credentials. It is appropriate to ask directly how much of the work is narrative, what a typical session looks like, and where the therapist has learned their methods. A helpful first conversation often includes asking about the therapist's experience with relationship issues similar to yours and how they balance narrative practices with other techniques.
You will also want to use the first chat to evaluate fit. Narrative sessions are conversational and collaborative - you should feel listened to as a co-author of change rather than a passive recipient of interpretation. If you plan to meet online, narrative work adapts well to video sessions because it relies on dialogue, careful questioning, and shared reflection. Finally, remember to verify licensure or registration where the therapist practises so you can understand the regulatory context for their work. That verification is separate from questions about style and fit, and it helps you make an informed choice.
Closing thoughts
Narrative therapy offers a particular way of attending to relationship concerns by focusing on the stories that shape how people relate to one another. If you are curious about exploring your relationship stories and experimenting with alternative accounts that reflect your values, consider asking therapists on this page about how they use narrative practices and what a first conversation would involve. Most people find that an initial discussion gives a clear sense of whether the approach feels like a productive way forward.
