How narrative therapy frames stress and anxiety

When stress and anxiety take hold, you often carry a set of stories about what is happening and who you are in relation to it. A narrative approach begins from the idea that those stories shape how you experience pressure, worry and overwhelm. Rather than treating you as a bundle of symptoms, narrative work looks at the language, metaphors and assumptions that have formed a familiar account about the problem - how it began, how it acts, and what it says about your abilities and identity. Many people discover that some of these stories were handed down by family, school, workplaces or wider cultural messages and that they are thin or unkind descriptions of complex life experiences.

Developed in Australia and New Zealand in the 1980s by Michael White and David Epston, narrative therapy offers practices designed to separate you from the problem so it can be described and examined. This helps you see patterns and moments that contradict the dominant story. Over time, the aim is not to label you differently but to build a preferred story - one that holds up in ordinary life and more closely reflects your values, commitments and hopes. Because the emphasis is on the stories you live by, narrative work often feels more conversational and exploratory than approaches focused mainly on thought content or symptom reduction.

How narrative therapy works with stress and anxiety

In narrative practice the first move is often to externalise the problem - to treat anxiety or stress as something that speaks and acts, rather than as an essential feature of who you are. Saying "the worry has been speaking loudly" allows you to describe how it interferes with your day and to notice its habits without equating yourself with it. A narrative therapist will attend to the familiar story that has grown up around the problem - the explanatory threads that make the issue feel inevitable - and trace where those threads came from. These origins might include family expectations, workplace cultures, past events or cultural narratives about success and weakness.

Practitioners who work narratively pay attention to unique outcomes - moments when the problem did not act in the usual way, or when you did something that did not fit the dominant story. Collecting and amplifying these moments creates material for re-authoring, the process of constructing an alternative account that better matches your values and abilities. Other narrative practices you may encounter include re-membering conversations, which invite attention to relationships and values that support the preferred story; outsider witness practices, in which others reflect on what they have heard; and definitional ceremony, more formal ways of acknowledging and consolidating change. These techniques aim to enlarge the story you live by so stress and anxiety become aspects of experience rather than defining labels.

What to expect in narrative sessions for stress and anxiety

If you choose to see someone who lists narrative therapy among their approaches, early conversations typically focus on description and naming. A therapist will ask you to tell the story of how stress or anxiety shows up, what it says, where it feels strongest and when it is quieter. Questions are likely to be open and curious - invitations to specify moments, meanings and relationships rather than to give quick diagnostic labels. The pace is often patient, giving space to notice small differences and exceptions to the dominant story.

As work continues, sessions move from naming and externalising toward gathering unique outcomes and re-authoring. You may be invited to expand on times when you acted in ways that contradict the problem story, to explore the values you want to live by, and to experiment with new actions that help a preferred story take shape in daily life. It is common for therapists who list narrative therapy to combine narrative ideas with other orientations, so a session might also include practical strategies, skills work, or reflective insight depending on the clinician's approach. Because the amount of narrative content varies by therapist, many people use an initial conversation to ask how much of the work will draw on narrative practices and what a typical session looks like.

Is a narrative approach the right fit for stress and anxiety?

There is no way to tell in advance whether any single approach will suit you. Narrative work tends to attract people who do not want to be reduced to a diagnosis and who are interested in examining the stories that shape their sense of self. You might be drawn to narrative ideas if you feel that a story handed down by family, school or culture no longer fits, or if you want therapy that emphasizes values, relationships and meaning rather than symptom checklists. People who prefer conversational, language-focused work often find narrative techniques helpful for creating alternatives to limiting narratives.

Narrative therapy differs from methods that concentrate primarily on thought content, such as cognitive approaches, or on specific skills training. It also differs from therapies that work mainly through exploring past events to uncover hidden drivers. In practice many clinicians integrate narrative ideas with other methods - for example to use narrative framing alongside behavioral experiments or mindfulness practices - when they believe this combination will support a client's goals. Remember that a listing of narrative therapy among a clinician's approaches does not guarantee the proportion of narrative work you will receive, so asking about how the approach is applied is an important step.

How to choose a therapist who works narratively with stress and anxiety

When you are looking for someone who works narratively, focus on questions that clarify how they use the approach rather than assuming training from a listing. Ask directly how much of their practice draws on narrative methods and what a typical session involves. You can request examples of the kinds of questions they ask in early sessions, or ask how they gather and use unique outcomes to build a preferred story. Inquire about the other approaches they combine with narrative ideas and about their experience with stress and anxiety in different life contexts.

Evaluate fit in a first conversation by noticing whether the tone feels collaborative and whether the therapist invites you to describe your story in detail. Pay attention to whether they respect your values and whether their way of asking questions opens up possibilities rather than closing them down. If you plan to meet online, know that narrative work is conversational and often translates well to video sessions because it relies primarily on dialogue and storytelling. Finally, verify professional licensure or registration that applies where you live so you know who regulates practice in your area. Most people use an initial meeting to sense whether the therapist's stance and methods will work for them, and therapists generally welcome questions about how they apply narrative ideas in their work.

Questions worth asking a therapist

  • How do you usually work with stress & anxiety?
  • How much of your work is narrative, and what does that look like in a session?
  • What does a first session cover?
  • How would we tell together whether this is helping?
  • Are you licensed or registered where I live?
