Narrative therapy in Illinois: an overview

Narrative therapy began in Australia and New Zealand in the 1980s through the work of Michael White and David Epston. Its starting point is simple and powerful - people make sense of their lives through stories. Some of those stories are rich and enlivening, while others are thin or harsh conclusions about who you are and what you can do. Narrative approaches invite you to examine those stories rather than accept them as definitive, treating problems as separate from people so that the story that organizes a life can be described, questioned and, over time, revised.

In Illinois, people are drawn to narrative work for its conversational, non-pathologizing stance and its emphasis on values and agency. Narrative therapy does not focus primarily on changing thoughts, teaching coping skills or probing past drives. Instead it pays attention to the language, scenes and relationships that shape a story about you. Over time, you and a therapist build toward a preferred story - an account of your values and commitments that fits ordinary life and gives you more room to act. Many Illinois clinicians who list narrative therapy among their approaches combine it with other methods, and the balance between narrative practices and other clinical tools varies from one clinician to another.

What narrative therapy can help with

Narrative work is often chosen when a narrow, limiting story has grown large enough to shape most of a person’s experience. You might come to narrative therapy if your life feels constrained by a single conclusion about yourself - for example, an enduring sense of shame, a repeating relationship pattern, or a sense that loss has permanently defined you. Common concerns addressed by narrative therapists include grief and loss, identity questions and life transitions, shame and self-criticism, repeating relationship dynamics, and cultural or family stories that affect belonging. Narrative language is particularly useful when the difficulty is not just a set of symptoms but a story that leaves most of your life out.

When you work narratively, the focus is on uncovering thin descriptions - the narrow phrases or labels that have been taken as the whole truth - and then enriching those accounts. Practitioners use techniques such as externalising the problem to separate it from you, searching for unique outcomes that show when the problem did not dominate, re-authoring or re-membering conversations that reconnect you with values and important relationships, and invitational practices like outsider witness or definitional ceremony to give the new story a social context. These practices are aimed at creating a more meaningful, durable narrative rather than promising a specific clinical outcome. There is no way to tell in advance whether an approach will suit you; many people use an initial conversation to see how the style feels.

How narrative therapy works in an online format

The conversational and reflective nature of narrative therapy translates well to video and audio sessions. Because narrative practice relies on careful listening, naming, and collaborative reflection, a clear line of sight and good audio often helps, but high-end equipment is not essential. What matters most is that you have a quiet, uninterrupted quiet space where you can speak freely and reflect without distraction. If you have concerns about the technical side of online sessions, ask a clinician how they structure remote work and what accommodations they recommend to support meaningful conversations.

Online narrative work can open access to a wider range of clinicians across Illinois, including those who specialize in cultural or family narratives that resonate with you. Keep in mind that most clinicians who list narrative therapy among their approaches integrate it with other techniques, so the experience may blend narrative practices with complementary tools. Also note that to provide care to Illinois residents a clinician must be licensed to practice in Illinois. If you are considering clinicians outside your immediate area, ask directly how they describe the narrative portion of their work and what a typical session looks like so you can assess fit before you commit to ongoing sessions.

Practicalities of online sessions

You may want to ask whether a clinician prefers video or audio, how they handle notes and follow-up reflections, and what they recommend if you encounter strong emotions between meetings. Many narrative clinicians use written reflections, letters or co-authored summaries to reinforce re-authoring work between sessions. These practices are about deepening the story work, not prescribing a schedule of techniques. A first conversation often gives the clearest sense of whether the clinician’s online style aligns with what you find helpful.

How to verify a therapist's license in Illinois

When you are looking at profiles, it is wise to confirm a clinician’s licensure. In Illinois you can check whether a psychologist, social worker, counselor or other licensed mental health professional holds an active license and whether any disciplinary actions are recorded. Start by noting the exact name and license type that appear on the clinician’s profile. Most Illinois professional regulatory information is publicly available through the relevant state licensing board online. Enter the clinician’s name and license number if provided, and review the listed status, expiration date and any public disciplinary information.

Licenses have different titles - for example clinical psychologist, licensed clinical social worker, licensed professional counselor - and each is governed by its own board or unit. If you see a license listed, verify that the license type matches the services you expect. If the profile lacks a license number or you have questions about standing, contact the state licensing office directly for guidance. Remember that being listed as offering online services does not change the need for an Illinois license when the person you are seeing is located in Illinois. Licensing checks give you factual background so you can then focus on questions of fit and approach in your conversations with a clinician.

Choosing a therapist who works narratively in Illinois

Selecting a clinician is often a mix of practical credentials and personal fit. Because many professionals list narrative therapy among several approaches, you may want to ask straightforward questions during an initial conversation. Ask how much of their work tends to be narrative in orientation, how they typically introduce externalising and unique outcomes, and what a session usually looks like when you are working on re-authoring. If you care about particular practices - such as outsider witness events or definitional ceremony - ask whether and how those are used in their online practice.

It is also helpful to talk about the focus areas the clinician has worked with, such as grief, identity, relationships, or cultural stories, and to ask about languages they offer and years of clinical experience. A listing that names narrative therapy is not evidence of a particular training background, so feel free to ask where they learned their approach and how they describe their ongoing learning. During a first conversation observe how the clinician listens, how they describe the problem as separate from you, and whether their examples of unique outcomes and re-authoring resonate with your sense of what change would look like.

Weighing online versus in-person is largely a question of what helps you feel present and engaged. Online sessions can be very effective for narrative work if you can create a consistent quiet space and a reliable connection. In-person meetings may offer different relational cues, but they are not inherently more narrative. The crucial factor is the therapist’s way of working with stories and the rapport you develop. Ultimately, most people learn whether a clinician’s narrative approach feels right in the first several conversations, when you can see how narrative practices are actually employed and whether the emerging preferred story fits your life.

When you explore profiles on this site, use the profile details to compare focus areas, approaches, credentials and languages. Ask direct questions about how much of the work is narrative and what a typical session looks like. Verifying licensure and having an initial conversation are practical steps that put the emphasis back on the relationship and the story work, which is at the heart of narrative therapy in Illinois.

Questions worth asking a therapist

  • How do you usually work with people where I live?
  • How much of your work is narrative, and what does that look like in a session?
  • What does a first session cover?
  • How would we tell together whether this is helping?
  • Are you licensed or registered where I live?
