Understanding men's issues through a narrative lens

When you bring concerns labelled as men's issues - pressure to perform, difficulty asking for help, struggles with emotional expression, relationship tensions or conflicts about identity and role - narrative therapy begins from the idea that you live your life through stories. Narrative therapy originated in Australia and New Zealand in the 1980s with the work of Michael White and David Epston. Its starting point is that many of the stories people carry are shaped by family messages, cultural norms and institutional expectations. Those familiar stories can be thin and unkind - short accounts that reduce a person's life to a list of supposed faults or fixed traits.

In a narrative approach, the task is not to argue away symptoms or to focus only on changing thought content. Instead you and a therapist examine how certain stories took shape, notice moments that do not fit those stories, and gradually build a richer account of who you are and what you value. That preferred story is practical - it is meant to hold up in ordinary life rather than existing as an abstract idea. For many men, narrative work creates a space to name cultural pressures - such as the expectation to be tough, unemotional or self-sufficient - and to treat those pressures as external influences rather than as defining truths about you.

How narrative therapy works with men's issues

Narrative practice uses a set of conversational practices that you will recognise if you attend sessions. Externalising is one of the first moves - talking about the problem as something separate from you so it can be described and examined. Instead of saying "I am angry" a narrative clinician might explore how anger has been showing up in your life and what it does. Tracing history asks where the familiar story came from - which family sayings, workplace cultures or social expectations helped shape it. Thin and rich description concerns the level of detail you use: thin description names a narrow problem, while rich description situates events in context so meaning is fuller.

Therapists who list narrative therapy among their approaches also look for unique outcomes - moments when you behaved in ways that do not fit the familiar story. Those moments become material for re-authoring conversations, where you and the therapist co-construct alternative plots and commitments. Other practices include re-membering conversations - paying attention to relationships that support preferred ways of being - outsider witness gatherings, and definitional ceremonies that help make new meanings public within a supportive circle. Taken together, these practices aim to shift the story away from restrictions and toward a preferred account of your values and aims.

What to expect in narrative sessions for men's issues

If you choose a therapist who works with a narrative approach, early sessions often centre on naming and mapping. You can expect questions that invite description of the problem's effects - when it started, how it shows up, and what it prevents you from doing. Those conversations are typically exploratory and conversational rather than directive. A clinician may ask you to tell particular stories from your life and then reflect back language that highlights your intentions, commitments and the contexts that shaped actions.

As therapy progresses, the focus tends to shift toward identifying unique outcomes and developing alternative storylines. Sessions may include invitations to notice small steps, to recall supportive relationships, or to describe a moment when the problem had less influence. The pace varies: some people move quickly into re-authoring, while others spend more time mapping and tracing the history of a story. Keep in mind that most therapists who list narrative therapy among their approaches combine it with other methods. How much of a session is explicitly narrative will vary by therapist, so it is reasonable to ask in an initial conversation how they typically use narrative practices and what a session usually looks like.

Is a narrative approach the right fit for you?

There is no reliable way to tell in advance whether any single approach will suit you. People who are drawn to narrative work often say they do not want to be reduced to a diagnosis or to a set of symptoms. You might be attracted to narrative ideas if you feel boxed in by family expectations or cultural stories about masculinity, if you want to explore meaning and values rather than only learn coping skills, or if you prefer a conversational style that co-authors new possibilities with you.

Narrative therapy differs from approaches that focus primarily on changing thought content or teaching particular skills. Cognitive approaches typically target patterns of thought and their relationship to mood, while skill-based therapies focus on behavioural techniques. Psychodynamic work often explores early relational patterns and unconscious processes. Narrative work is distinctive in its explicit attention to stories, cultural context and the social sources of meaning. That said, many therapists integrate approaches: you might find clinicians who combine narrative practices with skills training, mindfulness, or other methods depending on your needs. Trying a first conversation is a common way to find out whether the relational and conversational style fits you.

How to choose a therapist who works narratively with men's issues

When you use the listings on this page, pay attention to how therapists describe their focus areas, languages and professional credentials. Because a listing only indicates that a clinician includes narrative therapy among their approaches, it is appropriate to ask direct questions before committing to a longer course of work. Useful questions include asking how much of their practice is explicitly narrative, what a typical session looks like in the early and later stages, and where they trained or developed their approach. Asking about licensure or professional registration where you live is an important step in assessing credentials.

In a first conversation evaluate fit by noticing how a therapist listens to your stories, how they respond to the contexts you name, and whether their style helps you imagine different ways of living. Narrative work is conversational and often translates well to online video sessions because it relies on talking and reflective listening. If you prefer to work in person, you can ask about the setting they use for meetings. Above all, expect that the process is collaborative: the aim is not to impose a new story but to help you discover and strengthen a preferred story that aligns with your values and commitments in ordinary life.

Questions worth asking a therapist

  • How do you usually work with men's issues?
  • How much of your work is narrative, and what does that look like in a session?
  • What does a first session cover?
  • How would we tell together whether this is helping?
  • Are you licensed or registered where I live?
