Understanding eating difficulties through a narrative lens
When you live with an eating disorder or ongoing difficulties around food, weight and body image, part of what shapes your everyday experience is the story you tell about those experiences. Narrative therapy, developed in Australia and New Zealand in the 1980s by Michael White and David Epston, starts from the idea that people make sense of their lives through stories. Some of those stories are narrow or unkind because they have been handed down through family messages, cultural expectations, medical labels, school experiences or social media. A narrative approach pays attention to those stories - where they began, how they have been sustained, and in what contexts they seem true - rather than locating the person as the problem.
You will find that narrative work tends to focus on separating the problem from you as a person so that eating-related difficulties can be described, named and examined. That separation creates room to notice moments that do not fit the dominant story - for example times when you resisted a compulsion, experienced small relief, or acted from a value that the familiar story says you would not. These moments are called unique outcomes and they provide the raw material for building a different, more helpful account of who you are and what matters to you.
How narrative therapy works with eating disorders
In narrative sessions the therapist and you pay close attention to language. Externalising is an early and distinctive practice. Instead of saying you are a disorder, the work invites you to give a name to the problem as something that influences your life but is not your identity. Naming the problem can change how it is seen and spoken about, because it allows you to describe what the problem does, when it appears, and how people around you respond. This descriptive stance also opens up a search for where the familiar story came from - who taught it, what messages supported it, and what cultural or institutional forces have kept it alive.
The therapist will also encourage you to create thin and rich descriptions. A thin description reduces complex experience to a single headline that feels final. A rich description stretches the story wide enough to include contradictions, context and exception. Gathering unique outcomes is part of this - noticing and dwelling on moments that do not fit the familiar narrative. Over time, re-authoring conversations draw these moments together to produce a preferred story - an account of your values, commitments and abilities that holds up in ordinary life. Practices such as re-membering conversations, outsider witness questions and definitional ceremony are ways of inviting others' perspectives into the process, helping the new story gather social support outside the therapy room.
What to expect in narrative sessions for eating disorders
If you choose a therapist who works narratively, early sessions are often exploratory and conversational. You can expect questions that invite detailed descriptions rather than immediate problem-solving. The therapist may ask you to describe a recent episode in full, including the small actions, the language in your head, and the social context. These descriptions help to map how the problem operates and who or what contributes to its momentum. Naming and externalising usually appear in these initial conversations so that the problem can be spoken of as an influence rather than an identity.
As the work continues, conversations tend to shift toward identifying exceptions and amplifying them. You will be invited to tell stories about times when the eating-related problem did not have the upper hand, and the therapist may help you notice the skills and values that appeared in those moments. Later sessions can involve more active re-authoring. This may include co-creating written documents that record preferred narratives, inviting significant others to witness shifts, or planning small steps to test a new story in everyday settings. Keep in mind that most therapists who list narrative therapy among their approaches combine it with other methods, so the amount of explicitly narrative practice in any session varies. It is reasonable to ask a therapist how much of their work uses narrative practices and what a typical session looks like.
Is a narrative approach the right fit for you?
There is no reliable way to tell in advance whether a narrative approach will suit you, and many people use an initial conversation to find out. You might be drawn to a narrative approach if you find clinical labels or diagnostic language feels reducing, or if the sense that your difficulties are part of a broader story - shaped by family expectations, cultural ideals or institutional pressures - resonates with you. People who value exploring meaning, identity and social context often appreciate narrative methods because they focus on how stories are constructed and can be re-authored.
Narrative work differs from approaches that focus primarily on changing thought content, teaching coping skills, or exploring childhood experience as the main route to change. Cognitive approaches often address what you think about food and body and offer structured techniques to shift thought patterns. Skills-based approaches concentrate on teaching strategies to manage distress in the moment. Psychodynamic work tends to emphasize insight into past relationships and unconscious patterns. Narrative therapy's distinctive contribution is its attention to language, to the social origins of stories, and to practices that separate the person from the problem. That said, many therapists integrate narrative practices with techniques from other approaches to meet the complexity of eating-related difficulties.
How to choose a therapist who works narratively with eating disorders
When you explore listings, focus on descriptors that matter to you - the therapist's stated approaches, focus areas, professional credentials, languages and experience. Because the directory records only that a therapist lists narrative therapy among their approaches, it does not indicate how much of their work is narrative or what specific practices they use. You can clarify this in a first conversation by asking directly how much of their work uses narrative practices, what a typical session looks like, and which other approaches they commonly integrate. It is also sensible to verify licensure or registration where you live so that you understand the therapist's professional standing.
Fit is often discovered through an initial conversation. Pay attention to whether the therapist invites you to tell your story in detail, whether they ask about the origins of that story and about times it does not hold true, and whether they discuss procedures like externalising or re-authoring as possible ways to work together. If you prefer in-person work, you may ask about the therapy setting and whether an in-person appointment would be held in a quiet space. If you prefer online work, narrative conversations generally adapt well to video because they rely on detailed dialogue and shared reflection rather than elaborate physical interventions.
Choosing a therapist is a personal process. Use the listings here to compare focus areas, approaches and credentials, and bring direct questions into your first contact. Many people find that a single conversation gives them a clear sense of whether the therapist's narrative approach, combined with any other methods they use, feels like a good fit for the work they want to do.
