Understanding young adult issues through a narrative lens

Young adulthood is a time when many people notice friction between the life they are living and the stories they carry about who they are and who they might become. In narrative therapy, the starting point is that people make sense of their lives through stories. Some of those stories - passed along by families, schools, workplaces or wider culture - are thin and unkind, and they can limit how you understand your choices, relationships and ambitions. Rather than treating a set of symptoms in isolation, a narrative approach attends to the meanings that have become attached to events, decisions and identities. It opens space to separate the problem from the person, to trace where a familiar story began, and to look for moments that do not fit the dominant account.

Narrative therapy emerged in Australia and New Zealand in the 1980s through the work of Michael White and David Epston. Its practice names tools such as externalising conversations, thin and rich description, unique outcomes, re-authoring and re-membering conversations, outsider witnesses and definitional ceremony. When you bring a young adult concern - whether it involves transitions, relationship patterns, career uncertainty, identity questions or pressure from social expectations - a narrative approach is likely to focus first on the story that frames the concern. From there, the work is about expanding the story so your values and commitments can hold up in everyday life.

How narrative therapy works with young adult issues

In narrative practice, the problem is treated as a separate entity that can be described and examined. You and a therapist will often begin by externalising the issue - giving the problem a name or form so you can speak about its influence without it becoming an account of who you are. For example, instead of saying I am indecisive, the language might shift to The Indecision that shows up when I have to choose a career path. Externalising creates room for curiosity about how the problem operates and when it is less present.

Tracing the origins of the familiar story is another central task. You will explore where certain expectations or beliefs came from - perhaps a family message about success, a school culture that rewarded conformity, or social narratives about what adulthood should look like. These conversations are not about searching for blame but about mapping influences so you can see the story as formed rather than fixed. Narrative practitioners also look for unique outcomes - moments when you acted in ways that did not fit the limiting story. Collecting these exceptions and richly describing them provides raw material for re-authoring. Over time, the work builds toward a preferred story - an account of your values and commitments that is specific, detailed and practical enough to guide ordinary decisions.

What to expect in narrative sessions for young adult issues

Early sessions often focus on naming and externalising the problem. You can expect questions that invite you to describe how the issue shows up, the language you use about it, and the impact it has on different areas of life. A narrative therapist will ask about the times when the problem was less present and will encourage detailed, concrete descriptions of those moments. This emphasis on thick description helps you see alternative ways of being that already exist in your life.

As work progresses, sessions typically shift toward re-authoring conversations. These are practical and story-based rather than solely interpretive. You might develop small experiments or commitments that align with the values you want to foreground. The pace varies: some people move quickly from externalising to experimenting, while others spend longer mapping the story and its influences. It is important to note that many therapists who list narrative therapy among their approaches combine it with other methods. How much of a session is explicitly narrative will vary by practitioner, so it is reasonable to ask directly how they typically blend approaches and what a session usually looks like.

Is a narrative approach the right fit for young adult issues?

You may be drawn to a narrative approach if you find yourself frustrated by labels or if the explanations you have inherited about who you are no longer fit. People who prefer to work with stories and meaning - rather than focusing mainly on changing thoughts or building discrete skills - often appreciate narrative work. In contrast, approaches that work primarily on thought content, such as cognitive methods, focus on patterns of thinking; skill-based approaches concentrate on behavioural strategies; and psychodynamic work emphasizes insight into past relationships and internal drives. Narrative therapy is distinct because it explicitly treats the problem as external and works to author a life story that better matches your values and hopes.

That said, there is no way to tell in advance whether any particular approach will suit you. Most people use a first conversation to find out. A good initial discussion will help you sense whether the therapist's style, the balance of narrative and other methods, and the practical focus of the work feel right. Therapists often integrate methods when it seems helpful - for example bringing in skill practice alongside story work - and that integration does not negate a narrative orientation. The important questions are whether you feel listened to, whether the proposed direction resonates, and whether you can imagine trying the kind of experiments or re-authoring tasks that narrative work suggests.

How to choose a therapist who works narratively with young adult issues

When you review listings or prepare for a first conversation, it helps to have a few direct questions ready. You might ask how much of their practice is informed by narrative methods and what a typical session looks like. It is appropriate to ask where they gained clinical experience and to verify licensure or registration in your region. Do not assume that a listing that names narrative therapy indicates a particular level of training or expertise in the method; the listing only indicates that the therapist includes the approach among others they use.

In a first conversation you can also explore fit by asking how the therapist understands externalising conversations and whether they use practices such as collecting unique outcomes, re-authoring conversations, outsider witness practices or definitional ceremony. Ask for examples of how they might work with a young adult facing a turning point or identity question. Because narrative work is conversational and often relies on detailed description, it usually translates well to video sessions, where you can use gestures, objects and documents as part of the storytelling. If face-to-face meetings matter to you, check whether the therapist lists a safe setting for in-person work and how they structure sessions across different formats.

Choosing a therapist is a personal decision. Use the listings to compare focus areas, approaches, credentials, languages and experience. Then use an initial conversation to learn how a therapist blends narrative practice with other methods and to find out whether their style and pace match what you are looking for. There is no single sign that guarantees a good match, but asking clear questions and reflecting on how the conversation felt will help you move toward a preferred story for your life and the practical steps that support it.

Questions worth asking a therapist

  • How do you usually work with young adult issues?
  • How much of your work is narrative, and what does that look like in a session?
  • What does a first session cover?
  • How would we tell together whether this is helping?
  • Are you licensed or registered where I live?
