Understanding codependency through a narrative lens
People often come to therapy carrying a story about their relational life that feels familiar and inevitable. In codependency that story might run along lines such as I am mainly responsible for others feelings, my needs are less important, or setting boundaries is selfish. Narrative therapy starts from the idea that those accounts are just stories - they are ways of making sense that have been shaped by family patterns, cultural messages and personal history. Michael White and David Epston developed this approach in Australia and New Zealand in the 1980s, and the work invites you to examine the shape and limits of the story you live by rather than accepting it as the only available truth.
When you look at codependency as a narrative problem you shift focus from labeling you to describing the story that has influence. This creates room to notice exceptions - moments when you acted differently, small actions that point to other values - and to consider alternatives that might better match the life you want. A narrative therapist will help you locate where the familiar story came from, how it has been sustained, and what relationships and cultural voices have reinforced it. The aim is not to erase the past but to open possibilities for a richer story that fits your commitments, strengths and relationships.
How narrative therapy works with codependency
Narrative practice uses several distinctive techniques that are particularly relevant to patterns often described as codependent. A core move is externalising the problem - giving the set of behaviours and patterns a name and considering it as something that influences you rather than something that defines you. Instead of saying you are codependent, you and your therapist might talk about the "people-pleasing problem" or the "responsibility habit." This allows you to describe what the problem does in your life, where it shows up, and how it affects relationships without reducing you to a diagnosis.
A narrative therapist will attend to how the familiar story was formed. That means tracing messages from parents, partners, faith communities, workplaces and wider culture that helped make the story believable. You will be invited to offer thin descriptions - concise, behavioural accounts of the problem - and then gradually develop richer descriptions that include your intentions, values and context. The work also looks for unique outcomes - moments when the familiar pattern did not determine what happened. Those moments become footholds for re-authoring, a process of constructing a preferred story that better matches your values. Practices such as re-membering conversations, outsider witness conversations and definitional ceremonies can be used at different stages to gather witnesses, reflect on changes and make a new story more robust in ordinary life.
What to expect in narrative sessions for codependency
Your early conversations will likely focus on naming and mapping the problem. A therapist will ask you to describe specific instances where the pattern showed up, what you were doing and what the consequences were. Questions tend to be open and exploratory - queries about influence, intention and context - rather than about symptom counts. You may be asked to map the problem's effects across different life areas, to identify when it is most active and to notice exceptions. This mapping is typically conversational, with a curious tone aimed at building a shared understanding.
As you progress, sessions may shift toward gathering unique outcomes and re-authoring. You will be encouraged to expand on moments that do not fit the dominant story and to consider the values those moments reveal. Re-authoring involves articulating a preferred story in ways that are meaningful and practical - thinking about how the preferred account would show up in everyday decisions and relationships. Some practitioners use outsider witness or re-membering conversations to invite others to listen to parts of your story and reflect back what they notice. It is important to note that most therapists who list narrative therapy combine it with other approaches, and the proportion of a session spent on narrative work varies by therapist. Ask directly how much of the work is narrative and what a typical session looks like to understand their approach.
Is a narrative approach the right fit for codependency?
People are often drawn to narrative work when they want to move away from being defined by a label and prefer to explore how social, cultural and relational forces shaped their patterns. If you find that a story handed down by family or culture no longer fits - or if you want an approach that foregrounds your values and preferred identity - you may resonate with narrative practice. Narrative therapy differs from approaches that focus mainly on thought content, like cognitive-behavioural methods, or on skills training, like some behavioral approaches. It also differs from therapies that centre on interpreting past events as the primary route to change. Narrative work places emphasis on stories, language and social context, and often complements other methods rather than replacing them.
There is no reliable way to tell in advance whether a particular approach will suit you. Most people use an initial conversation to get a sense of fit. When codependency is part of a broader set of concerns - for example, mood regulation or trauma histories - therapists commonly integrate other techniques to address those needs alongside narrative practices. You should expect an honest conversation about how the therapist works and whether they will blend narrative methods with other approaches when appropriate.
How to choose a therapist who works narratively with codependency
When you review listings or prepare for a first call, decide which aspects of fit matter most to you - theoretical orientation, professional registration, languages spoken, cultural experience or areas of specialty. Since a listing only indicates that a therapist includes narrative therapy among their approaches, ask direct questions such as: How much of your work is narrative? Can you describe a typical session when working with codependency? Which narrative practices do you draw on, for example externalising, re-authoring or outsider witness conversations? What professional registration or licensure do you hold in the jurisdiction where you live? These questions help you determine whether the therapist's way of working and their professional credentials align with your needs.
Evaluating fit also happens in the first conversation. Notice whether the therapist listens for your values and unique outcomes and whether they invite you to co-author the direction of the work. If you plan to work online, remember that narrative therapy is highly conversational and generally adapts well to video sessions; you can ask how the therapist structures remote sessions and how they incorporate re-membering or witness processes in a digital format. Above all, remain curious and ask how the therapist measures progress in terms that matter to you - changes in everyday choices, clarity about values, or different patterns in relationships.
Final considerations
Narrative therapy offers a language and a set of practices for stepping back from a story that feels limiting and for exploring alternatives that better match your values. It privileges your voice and your sense of what matters while attending to the relational and cultural origins of the problems you describe. Remember to verify professional registration where you live and to ask straightforward questions about how narrative approaches are used in practice. Most people find a first conversation helpful for deciding whether a therapist's narrative style and overall approach feel like a good fit for the kind of change they want.
